Wizards’ Arenas to spend 30 days in halfway house

Suspended Washington Wizards star Gilbert Arenas(notes) was ordered Friday to spend 30 days in a halfway house for his conviction on gun charges stemming from a locker-room confrontation with a teammate.

District of Columbia Superior Court Judge Robert E. Morin also sentenced Arenas to 400 hours of community service, which cannot be conducted at basketball clinics, and a $5,000 fine.

Arenas apologized in court for his actions, saying, “Every day, I wake up wishing it did not happen.”

Arenas pleaded guilty to violating the city’s gun laws in a Dec. 21 incident at Verizon Center. After an argument over an unpaid gambling debt, Arenas brought several guns to the team locker room and set them in front of Javaris Crittenton’s(notes) locker with a sign telling him to “PICK 1.”

“The evidence is that both of you felt disrespected,” Morin told Arenas of the dispute over a few hundred dollars’ debt from a poker game. “Rather than acting like mature adults, you escalated the incident” by bringing guns to practice.

In court papers, prosecutors said Crittenton had a legitimate reason to believe Arenas’ threat was genuine.

Prosecutors wanted Arenas to go to jail for at least three months. They said he lied repeatedly about why the guns were in the locker room and even tried to cover up what had happened. They also said he knew bringing guns into D.C. was illegal and has a prior gun conviction.

U.S. Attorney Christopher Kavanaugh wrote in court papers that “if any other individual—without the fame, power, and the wealth of this defendant— brought four firearms into Washington, D.C., for the purpose of a similar confrontation,” they would surely go to jail.

Arenas’ lawyers sought probation and community service, arguing that the athlete was playing a misguided prank with no intention to harm anybody. They point out that the guns were unloaded, that Arenas’ lighthearted comments about the incident were misinterpreted, and that he’s a good role model who excelled at community service.

“This sad saga has sent a strong message to any and all who might consider bringing guns into the district,” defense attorneys wrote.

Arenas’ sentence could determine whether the Wizards will attempt to void the remainder of his six-year, $111 million contract, although the players’ union has vowed to fight such a move.

Regardless, Arenas’ misdeed has helped contribute to the precipitous decline of a franchise that is headed for its second consecutive last-place finish after several years of regularly reaching the playoffs.

Arenas disputed claims by prosecutors that he did not take the incident seriously. He specifically referred to his gunslinging pantomime during a pre-game warmup in Philadelphia while the crime was under investigation.

“For everybody else, I’m taking it lightly,” he said, referring to a widely circulated photo of him goofing around during the warmup. “I’m looking at picture where 14 or 15 guys are laughing together for the last time,” he said, his voice breaking.

The maximum term for Arenas’ crime is five years. The sentencing guidelines for someone with his record call for six months to two years, although those guidelines also allow for probation.

There has been little dispute about the facts of the case.

Arenas and teammate Javaris Crittenton got into an argument over a card game and exchanged threats while the team was flying home Dec. 19 from a road game. Two days later, Arenas brought his guns to the locker room and put them in a chair by Crittenton’s locker with a sign saying, “Pick 1.” Crittenton then retrieved his own gun and showed it to Arenas.

Crittenton pleaded guilty in January to a misdemeanor gun charge and received a year of unsupervised probation.

Arenas entered his guilty plea Jan. 15.

Morin said he took several factors into account in determining the sentence, including the fact that Crittenton only received probation and that he believed Arenas was remorseful.

Cassidy Replies to HIV Accusations

Philly rapper Cassidy has responded rumors being circulated that he has HIV/AIDS and was responsible for infecting a young woman.

A picture of a Philadelphia woman along with a statement accompanying it claims the woman slept with Cassidy multiple times in a Hackensack, New Jersey hotel.

After numerous encounters, the woman claimed she and Cassidy had unprotected sex, resulting in her testing positive for HIV/AIDS.

Cassidy flatly denied the report today (March 26) via his official Twitter page.

“|Stopactinstupid! I don’t even know that lil girl,” Cassidy Tweeted. “I just took a pic being nice…I only f**k with pretty girls, 10’s and I still don’t go raw.“

He also denied being sick with HIV/AIDS and instead, placed the blame on a jealous female fan.

“I’m sick with it, but not like that! That b**ch probably mad she not my type, lol. I’m perfectly healthy, so it can’t be true. It’s just the devil try make me mad because I’m about to go buy this bently [sic] today, I’m on my way to the bank. B**ch stop hating.”

Scarface Comes Out Of Retirement, Announces First Mixtape

First things first: A huge R.I.P. to Eric "Eazy-E" Wright who died 15 years ago Friday (March 26) at the age of 31. Eazy meant so much to the rap game — not just a godfather of gangsta rap, his business acumen was unparallelled and he helped revolutionize the independent record hustle. Your genius was amazing, O.G.

With that said, it's only right we keep it legendary for today's piece — and we have a humdinger. Scarface hit us up with a trailer and not only is the Houston trailblazer coming out of his short rap retirement, but 'Face is putting out his first ever street CD.

I'm a free agent," he said. "I always wanted to drop a mixtape on my own. So I just said, 'Let's drop an independent mixtape.' I feel that I should be as an adult and musician and pioneer — that's what they call me. ... I feel that I need to move on to another stage with the way I deliver my music to the public. I got a lot of sh-- and I'm using about 3 percent of what I know about music. I'm not using it all. I'm music. I can play that sh-- long enough for a real musician to catch it and feel me, where I'm going, and we make magic like that."

'Face strongly hinted that we'll hear live instrumentation on his mixtape.

"I'm f---ing music — I love music," he said. "I eat, sleep and sh-- music. I been around music all my life. I was born in a band. My uncles and cousin were in a band ... my daddy was a DJ. That's all I ever knew. My mom was in a band. She was a singer. That's all I ever knew was being in a band. I'm comfortable being onstage in front of people, playing all the instruments."

Rumor: Cassidy gave girl HIV

This is the quote rolling around the internet, I would love to see Cassidy's reply...

I have some important information about the rapper Cassidy that girls need to know. I met cassidy some time last summer at a concert he was doing in Philly. After the concert he invited me and my friends to play pool with him and his friends then we chilled at one of his homeboys house. The pictures are from this day we met. He wasnt anything less then a gentlemen that day so we exchanged numbers. We talked for a few months and saw each other when ever we could. It was usually at my apartment in Philly. A couple times I drove up and we met at a hotel in Hacknsack NJ. I was never able to go to his house because his babys mother and kids were there. The very 1st time we had sex he didn’t want to use a condom but I insisted. After a while we built up trust and he convinced me not to use one. The BIGGEST mistake of my life. I learned I contacted HIV from him.

When I confronted him about it he denied it but could not hide that he seemed very worreid and admitted to having unprotected sex with other girls he said they were clean. I found out later to from a friend of mine who knows a philly stripper named Porsha that he has unprotect sex with strippers and video hoes on a REGULAR BASES. Well that was the last time I spoke to him ofcourse. I am the biggest IDIOT in the world for trusting and believeing this dirty lying ass hole. I KNOW it was from Cassidy he is the only one i had sex with near the time and the ONLY one I did not use a condom with.

AMALGAM DIGITAL STOPPING SLAUGHTERHOUSE FROM GOING TO SHADY

Amalgam Digital. Joe Budden. Shady Records. Slaughterhouse. I am getting some pretty interesting intel that is telling me that Amalgam Digital is the real reason that Slaughterhouse cannot go an sign with Shady Records. Apparently, Joe Budden still owes them another album under his contract. He says that is not the case. So Amalgam is holding the whole Slaughterhouse/Shady Deal up. I’m not sure if there is some other level to this but that’s pretty much it. This is likely to find its way to court, but I don’t know. I think Shady will soon be uninterested, but that’s my opinion. I really want to see SH on Shady so we can see some variety in rap on the commercial level. Good luck.

Jimi Hendrix’s Last Days and Lost Music: New Issue of Rolling Stone

On August 26th, 1970, Jimi Hendrix celebrated the official opening of his Electric Lady Studios in Manhattan’s West Village. It would be the last time he ever set foot in his beloved recording sanctuary; he died three weeks later in London at age 27 after ingesting a powerful dose of the sedative Vesperax. But a month prior to the party, the man Rolling Stone would later name the Greatest Guitarist of All Time laid down a few special tracks, including a jam with Steve Winwood on “Valleys of Neptune,” in Electric Lady’s Studio A. That song, in a different incarnation, is now the centerpiece of a new collection of previously unreleased Hendrix gems called Valleys of Neptune. In the new issue ofRolling Stone on sale at newsstands today, David Fricke dives into Hendrix’s last days and lost recordings, tracing the epic plans and earthly troubles that marked the guitar god’s final months.

Nas and Damian Marley Perform New Collaborations at SXSW

Considering Jamaican immigrants (and their soundsystem culture) were the driving force behind the birth of hip-hop, and that rap in turn inspired reggae’s evolution into dancehall, one would think the two genres would mix more often.

Maybe they will in the wake of Nasand Damian “Jr Gong” Marley’s upcoming collaboration ‘Distant Relatives,’ at least if their searing surprise appearance at the Fader Fort during SXSW is anything to go on.

Both are icons in their respective fields and after honing their act during last summer’s Rock the Bells tour and subsequent studio sessions, the duo are clearly a well-oiled machine with stage presence to spare.

Eclipse Stunts Made Nikki Reed Want to Die

Movie vampire Nikki Reed says she wanted to “die” shooting The Twilight Saga: Eclipse because it was so emotionally and physically draining.

“We’re always standing out in like 30-degree weather, with pouring rain, trying to keep our vampire makeup intact,”she told PEOPLE at designer Yotam Solomon’s fashion show in Los Angeles. “It’s hectic, it’s crazy, it’s very jam-packed full of emotion.”

“We were doing a lot of stunts, too much in too little time,” Reed, 21, said, calling life on set “tough.” “The hardest part is trying to fly around on cables in the woods at 6 o’clock, fighting the sunset and stuff. And looking like we’re not cold and super powerful, when we just want to die.”

But, she added, filming “really amazing scenes” with pal Kristen Stewartwas “lovely.”

“She’s my buddy,” Reed said. “We love each other. We had fun shooting together.”

Lloyd Banks Saw Trina Naked, Talks Celebrity Nude Leaks

G-Unit's Lloyd Banks talks about celebrity nude photos leaking and how he protects himself from embarrassment.

VIBE: Have you ever had an experience with celebrity hacking that you were able to prevent?
LLOYD BANKS: Not with no pictures or nothing like that. [Laughs] But s**t, as we speak, my Gmail was hacked into a few days ago. It wasn’t the first time… It’s real dangerous out there ’cause they can redirect your mail so stuff will be going to them from your inbox.

Damn, like someone reset the password?
Yeah. I just immediately changed my password.

Is there anything you have on lock that, if leaked, would really embarrass you?
Nah. s**t, the fact of losing music is embarrassing enough, but all that other s**t like pictures and video… I don’t do any of that s**t. You gotta know who you are as a human. [Laughs] If you’re sending somebody your picture and you’re just a regular Mo, then that picture won’t mean anything. But you don’t have to be a celebrity to be embarrassed. You can be a regular person that turned into a celebrity later. So that goes for the regular Moes too. Be careful.

Even if you have the most gorgeous girl begging you to videotape or something, you won’t do it?
s**t, I’ll do it, but I’ll just keep the tape. And actually I don’t even trust myself, so I ain’t gonna keep the tape either. [Laughs]

So you just delete immediately?
Yeah, immediately. That’s my advice.

When a celebrity sees another celebrity’s naked photos leak, what’s your first thought?
It depends on who it is.

Okay, let’s say... Trina.
I’m like ‘Damn.’ That’s something I wanted to see for a minute. I ain’t mad at it. I mean, I don’t wish that on nobody, but it happened and I’ma look.

The Harlem rapper, who was sentenced to 75 years in prison, has hired new legal representation according to his manager Jolie O'Shay. Keira Knightley Walks the Plank, Penelope Cruz Joins the Ranks of 'Pirates'

How do you keep the fourth installment of a beloved franchise from losing its freshness? For Jerry Bruckheimer and the rest of the team behind the popular "Pirates of the Caribbean" series, you throw a couple familiar characters overboard and make way for some new blood -- and a new leading lady for the remaining big name.

While Johnny Depp will be losing Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom as costars in "Pirates of the Caribean: On Stranger Tides," he'll be gaining an onscreen love interest in Penelope Cruz. The Oscar-winning actress is said to be playing the role of bad-guy Blackbeard's daughter, who will also be the first romantic counterpart for Captain Jack Sparrow since the franchise set sail in 2003.

Though the extent of the romance isn't yet confirmed -- "Pirates" executive producer Bruckheimer would only say that there will be "a little romance" between Sparrow and Cruz's character -- Bruckheimer told MTV News that Cruz "brings a lot of humor" to the role, which he says is a "feisty" one.

Cruz had been in negotiations to join the cast since February. Ian McShane will play Blackbeard, who -- in addition to being Sparrow's nemesis -- is the "nastiest pirate ever," in Bruckheimer's opinion.

Depp has been on something of a leading-lady tear of late. When he assumes the role of Sparrow in June, he will have just finished playing the paramour of Angelina Jolie in the thriller "The Tourist," which is currently shooting in Venice, Italy. Cruz was most recently seen in "Nine," which was directed by Rob Marshall ("Chicago"). Incidentally, Marshall is also directing "On Stranger Tides." (Gere Verbinksi directed the first three "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies.) The fourth installment of the series will hit theaters in May 2011.
